Charity Memorial Lecture
The Rotary Club of Pangbourne
READING PAYS TRIBUTE TO DAVID RATTRAY
Our Club, the Rotary Club of Pangbourne, is paying tribute to David Rattray the former South African Historian and renowned narrator, who was tragically murdered last year at his home in South Africa.
We first invited David to speak in 2006 and this he did in the October when he thrilled the audience at Reading University with his breathtaking recounting of the famous battle at Isandhlwana in the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. This battle took place the day before the battle of Rorke’s Drift, on which the film ‘Zulu’ was based. The battle of Isandhlwana was the battle featured in the follow up film ‘Zulu Dawn’. David covered this battle and captivated us with his wonderful story telling. At the end he stopped and announced to our surprise that he would be back next year to finish the story of Rorke’s Drift. Sadly, due to his untimely murder, this was never to be and the world is a sadder place for the loss of such an inspirational individual and orator.
David’s wife Nicky has continued running their famous lodge and ranch in South Africa, which encompasses both Isandhlwana and Rorke’s Drift. We are very fortunate that David’s Senior Guide, Rob Caskie, has very kindly agreed to return to Reading to finish the story. Rob is himself an excellent story-teller.
This should not be missed!
The lecture will take place at the Palmer Building at Reading University on Saturday 11th October 2008 and doors will open at 7.00pm for an 8.00pm start.
